Those findings can be striking, but the nurse must deliberately search for carditis because valve inflammation is the manifestation that can leave permanent injury. The working model is: recent group A Streptococcus (GAS) exposure → delayed immune cross-reaction → inflammation in several organs, especially the heart → possible cumulative valve scarring. Management therefore has two timelines: control the acute illness and prevent the next episode.
