Look for a pattern rather than one isolated feature: progressive central weight gain with thin limbs, proximal muscle weakness, fragile skin with broad purple striae, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and increased susceptibility to infection and thrombosis. The excess glucocorticoid may come from prescribed steroids or from an endogenous ACTH-producing or adrenal lesion, and the source determines treatment. Nursing priorities are to identify the cause, recognize complications early, protect fragile skin and bone, and prevent adrenal insufficiency during steroid withdrawal or after definitive treatment.
