Influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused primarily by influenza A or B viruses. It often begins abruptly, but the absence of fever does not make it harmless or rule it out. The bedside priority is to judge physiologic impact: work of breathing, oxygenation, mental status, hydration, urine output, and the stability of chronic conditions. Treatment decisions depend on severity, complication risk, time since symptom onset, age, pregnancy status, kidney function, and the patient's ability to take medication safely. A low-sensitivity negative rapid test must not overrule a convincing clinical picture, particularly in a hospitalized or high-risk patient. The LVN/LPN supports timely treatment by recognizing the pattern, applying transmission precautions, carrying out prescribed care, monitoring response, and reporting deterioration promptly.
