AMD damages the macula, the retinal region responsible for detailed central vision. A person may retain useful peripheral vision yet lose the ability to read, recognize faces, or see a straight line clearly. Early disease may produce no symptoms, so a patient who reports new waviness, a missing central area, or sudden one-eye vision loss should not be reassured that the change is simply aging. The practical nurse’s immediate contribution is to assess each eye as directed, document the change and its onset, reinforce the prescribed ophthalmic plan, and escalate findings promptly within state scope and facility policy.
